How does New Leaf compare to the previous Animal Crossings?

I've been debating on getting a 3DS for a while, but it's hard to justify when the only new feature is one I don't need or want. But of course, I loved the first game, Wild World, and City Folk quite a bunch, so if New Leaf is any better, I'm sold. I'm assuming at least one of you guys plays these games and can tell me what you think of the newest one.

Also, if anyone happens to live in Japan and can get me a copy of Doubutsu no Mori for the N64, I will love you forever.

Oooo yes, I will be following this thread with great interest. My brother and I got some Christmas money, and instead of being responsible and paying bills with it, we were thinking about a 3DS for New Leaf and Zelda.

New Leaf is addicting, like you will wish you lived in the game. I just haven't played it lately due to Zelda and Pokémon.

I... I think that's what I'll do. As soon as I find a reasonably priced purple 3DS, that is. It needs to be the purple one.

The bulk of my pre- New Leaf experience is comprised of hours and hours of Wild World , some of City Folk , and a bit of the original.

Compared to Wild World , you have a lot more control over your town since you're the mayor. There are ordinances you can use to manipulate prices, activity, and the overall cleanliness of the town. There are also public works projects that you can fund; some are just things that are pretty to look at, while others are entire buildings or additions that unlock new features of the game. Not all public works projects are available from the start; you have to wait for your neighbors to suggest most projects.

Since there's a lot more to spend your money on, there are more ways you can make money as well. You can grow trees of perfect fruit (only your town's fruit can be perfect) and sell them in your town for 1,000 bells or in a friend's town for 3x that much. There's also the island resort - once you unlock it, you can visit it in the evening to hunt for several species of beetles that command high selling prices.

I never played online, but it looks like a lot of fun from the videos I've seen. I eventually put the game down because fall semester started and I couldn't devote time to it. Additionally, I'd spent the money I got from beetle sales upgrading my house and funding the public works projects of my choice; I was beginning to get bored of waiting for my neighbors to suggest new projects. Even with all of the money that I spent, though, my town is still pretty Spartan compared to other towns that are full of projects, flowers, walkways made from custom patterns, etc. because other people kept at it. I think that if you can power through that plateau where you don't have many projects that you want to to spend bells on, the game will reel you back in.
